Celebrated each August in the Tigray and Amhara regions of northern Ethiopia, Ashenda honours women and community pride through several days of singing, dancing and communal feasting, timed to follow the end of the Filseta fasting period observed by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Young women and girls dress in colourful traditional attire, forming groups that move through towns and villages singing songs specific to the festival, while communities open their homes to welcome and feed the celebrating groups.

Injera, the country's staple fermented flatbread, appears throughout the festivities alongside tihlo, dense barley dumplings particularly associated with Tigray and Amhara cooking, and locally brewed beer shared communally as part of the celebration's genuinely festive, unrestrained spirit. The festival's focus on sisterhood and collective celebration gives it a distinct character among Ethiopia's largely religious festival calendar, functioning as much as a social and cultural affirmation as a spiritual observance.

For visitors interested in the specifically northern Ethiopian traditions of Tigray and Amhara, distinct from the country's more internationally documented Oromo and Addis Ababa-centred celebrations, Ashenda offers a genuinely joyful, community-rooted way to experience it.
