Held throughout August across various locations in Zanzibar, the Spice Festival celebrates the archipelago's globally significant spice heritage, once so central to its economy that the island became known simply as the Spice Islands. For a month, exhibitions, guided plantation tours, tastings and cooking demonstrations spread across Zanzibar give visitors a comprehensive way to explore the aromatic legacy that once made the island one of the most important trading posts in the entire Indian Ocean.

The festival gives particular attention to clove, historically Zanzibar's single most important export crop, alongside cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and vanilla, all still grown on working plantations that visitors can tour directly. Cultural performances run alongside the more culinary programming, reflecting the festival's broader ambition to celebrate spice not just as an ingredient but as the foundation of Zanzibar's entire historical identity.

For visitors wanting to understand exactly why Zanzibar earned its 'Spice Island' reputation, rather than simply hearing about it secondhand, the Spice Festival offers direct access to the plantations, producers and dishes that built that reputation over centuries of Indian Ocean trade.
