Held every first Saturday of October in the village of Areni, in Armenia's Vayots Dzor region, the Areni Wine Festival celebrates a winemaking tradition that archaeologists have confirmed stretches back at least 6,000 years — the world's oldest known winery was discovered in a cave near this very village in 2011, cementing Armenia's status as one of the true birthplaces of wine itself. More than a decade into its own history, the festival has become a genuinely important fixture in Armenia's cultural tourism calendar.

Over 100 of Armenia's best wines from around 30 producers are poured across the festival, including indigenous grape varieties like kharji and Areni Noir, largely unknown outside the Caucasus but increasingly recognised internationally for their genuine quality and distinct character. The festival opens with a spectacular parade of winemakers accompanied by singing and dancing, and food runs just as central to the celebration as the wine itself — khorovats, Armenian barbecue, grills on the street alongside local cheese vendors, and traditional pastries and cakes sold by women from the village.

Set against Areni's dramatic backdrop of red and yellow rock formations, a medieval church and a winding river, the festival offers wine lovers a genuinely rare experience — tasting wine made from grapes descended, quite literally, from the same varieties cultivated in the world's very first documented winery.
