Held each September in Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city, the Apple Festival celebrates a genuinely remarkable piece of botanical history: the surrounding Tian Shan mountains are widely recognised by scientists as the genetic birthplace of the domesticated apple, with wild Malus sieversii trees still growing in the region's forests today. Almaty's own name is popularly understood to mean 'father of apples' or 'place of apples', a direct nod to this deep agricultural heritage.

The festival draws on Kazakhstan's broader autumn harvest season, which sees the country's famed melons, grapes and rice brought in alongside its apples, with local Oshxona plov centres cooking the national dish in giant kazans for hundreds of visitors at a time as part of the wider celebratory atmosphere. Communities gather for outdoor feasts celebrating the harvest, giving visitors a genuine window into just how central this particular fruit remains to the city's identity, thousands of years after its wild ancestors first grew in these same surrounding hills.

For apple enthusiasts specifically, few festivals anywhere in the world offer as direct a connection to the fruit's actual evolutionary origin as Almaty's — a celebration held in the exact mountain range where the modern apple, eaten in kitchens worldwide today, first began.
