Held each September or October according to the lunar calendar, Dashain stands as Nepal's largest and longest festival, spanning fifteen days of worship, family gatherings and genuinely elaborate feasting to mark Goddess Durga's mythological defeat of the demon Mahishasura. Unlike many Nepali festivals, Dashain involves no fasting or dietary restriction — quite the opposite, with the ten-day build-up to the festival's climax treated as an extended period of feasting fit, as locals describe it, for royalty.

Mutton curry sits at the absolute centre of Dashain's culinary tradition, with families often purchasing a live goat days in advance, keeping it at home before its ceremonial slaughter, a practice that carries deep religious meaning around strength and prosperity. Sel roti, a ring-shaped sweet rice bread deep-fried to a crisp golden finish, appears throughout the festival alongside fried fish, considered auspicious and symbolic of abundance, and juju dhau, a rich, saffron-infused yogurt pudding served as a celebratory finish. After days of rich, meat-heavy feasting, the festival traditionally closes with gundruk ko jhol, a simple, gentle soup made from fermented leafy greens, offering the digestive system a welcome return to basics.

For visitors wanting to understand Nepali family life at its most concentrated, Dashain offers an unmatched window — a full fortnight when work largely pauses nationwide, extended families reunite from across the country, and the kitchen becomes the genuine centre of celebration.
