Held each August in Davao City, the Kadayawan Festival celebrates the bountiful harvest of fruits, flowers and indigenous cultures found across the surrounding Mindanao region. Kadayawan itself derives from a local word expressing gratitude for a good, prosperous life, and the festival unfolds as a genuinely joyful thanksgiving, blending agricultural celebration with a deliberate showcase of the region's rich indigenous heritage.

Street parades feature dancers and floats adorned with fresh flowers and exotic fruits grown throughout the fertile Davao region, including durian, mangosteen and rambutan, giving the festival a genuinely tropical, botanical character distinct from many of the Philippines' other more purely religious celebrations. Traditional music, indigenous dance and displays celebrating Mindanao's many ethnic groups run alongside the festivities, and food naturally follows suit — local delicacies and fresh produce fill stalls throughout the city, giving visitors direct access to the fruit and flowers that give the festival its very name.

For visitors wanting to understand Filipino food culture specifically through the lens of Mindanao, rather than the more commonly documented Luzon and Visayas regions, Kadayawan offers a genuinely comprehensive introduction — a harvest festival where gratitude, indigenous identity and tropical abundance all converge in the same week each August.
