Held each October in the historic Jeonju Hanok Village, the Bibimbap Festival has run since 2007 and celebrates the city's most iconic dish in the region widely regarded as the food capital of Korea. Jeonju bibimbap carries distinctive local touches that set it apart from versions found elsewhere in the country: rice cooked in beef broth for extra depth, finished with sesame oil, and topped with region-specific ingredients like Jeonju's own soybean sprouts and seasoned raw beef.

The festival, which has drawn as many as 150,000 visitors in past editions, includes cooking competitions, tastings of local recipes, and hands-on lessons in preparing traditional bibimbap alongside folk games, concerts and a lively night market. One of the event's most memorable spectacles is the preparation of a single giant bibimbap capable of feeding 1,000 people, assembled communally as a genuine centrepiece of the celebration. A dedicated cooking contest for foreign visitors and a playful 'find the bibimbap' activity give the festival an accessible, participatory feel beyond simple tasting.

For visitors interested in Korean regional cuisine specifically, Jeonju's festival offers a rare, single-dish deep dive — a chance to understand exactly what separates this particular city's bibimbap from the more generic version served internationally, in the very hanok village long considered the dish's spiritual home.
