Held every first weekend of September on Brussels' UNESCO World Heritage Grand-Place, the Belgian Beer Weekend has run since 1998 as a dedicated celebration of Belgian beer, recognised itself by UNESCO as part of the country's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Over three days, the city's most beautiful square, ringed by ornate guild houses and the historic City Hall, becomes what amounts to one enormous open-air bar.

More than 50 breweries, ranging from centuries-old institutions to small newcomers, pour a selection of over 500 beers across the festival, giving visitors a genuinely comprehensive introduction to a brewing tradition spanning more than 1,500 distinct beer varieties. Entrance to the Grand-Place is free, with drinks purchased individually using festival-specific tokens, and the weekend includes parades of historic brewers' wagons, live music, and tasting demonstrations led by industry experts.

For a country whose beer culture runs as deep as Belgium's, few events offer as concentrated an introduction as the Belgian Beer Weekend — a chance to sample everything from classic Trappist ales to niche lambics, all within the same historic square that has hosted Brussels' commercial life for centuries.
