A wine festival on the volcanic island of Santorini, home to some of Greece's most distinctive wines grown in volcanic soil.
Santorini's vines grow in genuinely unusual conditions — volcanic soil, trained low to the ground in basket shapes to protect against the island's fierce winds — producing wines, particularly the white Assyrtiko grape, found nowhere else in quite the same form. This festival celebrates that distinctive wine tradition each August.
Known locally as Ifestia (after Hephaestus, god of fire, a nod to the island's volcanic origins), the festival includes tastings, traditional dancing and fireworks set against Santorini's dramatic caldera views.
