Each December, Wrocław's spectacular Gothic Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, transforms into one of Central Europe's most beloved Christmas markets. Dozens of wooden stalls spread across the square and its surrounding streets, selling handicrafts, ornaments and gifts alongside the food and drink that define the Polish festive season.

Visitors can expect pierogi, oscypek smoked cheese grilled over open flames, kiełbasa sausages and freshly baked gingerbread, all washed down with grzaniec, Poland's version of mulled wine, warmed against the cold. The market's setting, framed by Wrocław's colourful, ornately decorated townhouses and the city's famous gnome statues scattered throughout, gives it a distinctly fairy-tale atmosphere that has helped it earn a reputation as one of the most photogenic Christmas markets anywhere in the region.

For visitors exploring Central Europe's Christmas market circuit, Wrocław offers a genuinely serious rival to the more internationally famous markets of Germany and Austria, combining a similarly festive atmosphere with distinctly Polish food and craft traditions.
