Observed each August, the Apple Feast of the Saviour, known as Yabluchnyi Spas, marks one of three traditional 'Saviour' feasts in the Eastern Slavic Orthodox calendar, following the Honey Feast earlier in the month and preceding the Nut Feast later on. Rooted in the Christian Feast of the Transfiguration but carrying a distinctly pre-Christian character in its folk customs, the holiday marks the symbolic transfiguration of nature as summer gives way to the beginning of autumn.

The day's central custom involves bringing freshly harvested apples to church to be blessed, a tradition that, unusually within Orthodox practice, allows the blessed food to be eaten by ordinary worshippers rather than reserved for clergy alone — a folk echo of the First Fruits offerings found in other agricultural religious traditions. Because apples are grown far more widely across Russia than grapes, which receive a similar blessing in the Byzantine tradition the feast descends from, the apple naturally became the holiday's defining symbol in Russian folk practice. Processions, water blessings at rivers, and communal sharing of the newly blessed harvest all feature in how the day is traditionally marked.

For a country with such a deep cultural attachment to the apple — from the orchards of Kolomna to the presence of the fruit throughout Russian folklore and literature — Yabluchnyi Spas offers a genuinely rooted, community-centred counterpart to the more secular, tourist-facing food festivals held elsewhere in the calendar.
