The largest cheese market in Central Switzerland, held on Lucerne's Kapellplatz since 2001 with cheesemaking demonstrations and alphorn music.
Established in 2001 and normally held on a mid-October weekend at Lucerne's Kapellplatz, the Lucerne Cheese Festival has grown into the largest cheese market anywhere in Central Switzerland. The event brings together cheesemakers from the Lucerne region and beyond, offering visitors an unusually broad selection of varieties in one place — recent editions have featured over 200 types of cheese across more than 20 market stalls, including goat and sheep cheese alongside Switzerland's better-known cow's milk classics.
Beyond the market itself, the festival includes live cheesemaking demonstrations, a milking competition, and performances on the alphorn, the long wooden horn closely associated with Swiss alpine tradition. The combination gives the festival a genuinely rounded introduction to Swiss dairy culture, extending well past simple tasting into the actual craft and rural tradition behind it.
Set in Lucerne's compact, picturesque old town, within easy reach of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains, the festival offers visitors a convenient, central-Switzerland counterpart to Gruyères' more rural spring celebration — a good option for anyone whose Swiss itinerary doesn't extend as far as the French-speaking cheese country further west.
