The Islay Festival of Malt and Music, when whisky enthusiasts descend on this small Hebridean island for a week of distillery open days and rare releases.
The small Hebridean island of Islay is home to a disproportionate number of Scotland's most celebrated single malt distilleries, known collectively for their distinctive smoky, peaty character. Each May, Feis Ile — the Islay Festival of Malt and Music — sees every distillery on the island host its own open day, complete with tours, tastings and, in many cases, an exclusive festival-only bottling released just for the occasion.
Those limited festival bottlings have become genuinely significant events in their own right within the whisky world, with some released expressions selling out within hours and later trading for well above their original price among collectors.
Beyond the whisky, the festival includes traditional music, ceilidhs and island food, drawing a devoted international following to a place that, for the rest of the year, remains a remote and sparsely populated corner of Scotland — for one week, transformed into a genuine pilgrimage site for whisky enthusiasts.
