A Kentish coastal festival celebrating one of England's oldest oyster fisheries, dating back to Roman times.
Whitstable's oyster beds have been worked since Roman times, and this festival celebrates that genuinely ancient fishing tradition with a week of events built around the native oyster, including a ceremonial "landing of the oysters" that opens proceedings each year.
Oyster eating competitions, seafood stalls and a foreshore procession fill the small Kentish coastal town, giving visitors a proper taste of one of England's most historically significant, if lesser-known internationally, seafood traditions.
