Yemen holds a genuinely unique place in coffee history — widely considered the original home of Arabica cultivation outside Ethiopia, and the source of the word 'mocha' itself, named for the historic Yemeni port from which coffee was first exported to the wider world some 600 years ago. Each year around March 3rd, marked as Yemen's National Coffee Day, Sana'a's Al Sabeen Park hosts a coffee festival celebrating that heritage.

Held under the slogan 'we revive history and plant hope', the festival brings together the Higher Agricultural and Fisheries Committee, coffee exporters and farmers' unions for several days of exhibitions and tastings. Visitors can sample fresh and roasted beans from across Yemen's coffee-growing regions, each carrying names tied to the specific areas where they were cultivated — Yafei Matari, Al-Barai, Al-Harazi and Al-Hafashi among them — alongside symposiums exploring the history of Yemeni coffee and the port of Mocha itself.

For an industry that has weathered a decade of conflict, with many farmers pressured toward more immediately profitable crops, the festival carries real economic weight alongside its cultural significance — an attempt to help Yemeni coffee reclaim a place in international markets that its quality has always merited, even through the most difficult years.
