Taking place during the Catholic season of Lent, Rara is a distinctly Haitian tradition of street processions, running as a genuine counterpart to the country's main Kanaval celebrations held earlier in the year. Bands made up of drummers, horn players and dancers wind through towns and rural roads across Haiti, drawing crowds that grow as each procession moves through a community, with music, dance and spiritual elements rooted in Haitian Vodou tradition running throughout.

Food vendors follow the processions closely, setting up along the routes to sell fritay, Haiti's beloved category of fried street foods, including griot, fried plantains and pate kode, savoury pastries stuffed with fillings ranging from hot dog and egg to smoked herring. The combination of music, spiritual observance and street food gives Rara a genuinely different character from Kanaval's more urban, parade-focused celebration — Rara tends to be more rural, more spontaneous, and more deeply connected to specific local communities and their own bands.

For visitors interested in Haitian culture beyond its more internationally known Kanaval, Rara offers a genuinely distinct and, in many ways, more intimate tradition — proof that Haiti's Lenten season, rather than being purely a period of restraint, carries its own vibrant, food-filled public celebration.
