Held each year on the first Sunday of July, the Portland Jerk Festival stands as the largest jerk and food festival anywhere in Jamaica, fittingly located in the parish most closely associated with the origins of jerk cooking itself. Jerk cuisine traces back to the Maroons, formerly enslaved Africans who escaped into Jamaica's mountains in the 17th century and developed the technique of marinating meat in a distinctive blend of allspice, Scotch bonnet peppers, thyme and other spices before slow-cooking it over pimento wood.

The festival brings together jerk cook-offs, live music, dominoes and traditional games across a full day of celebration, with adults enjoying arts and crafts and cultural performances from local musicians while children are kept entertained with shave ice, bouncy castles, fairground rides and face painting. Given Portland's own Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, played such a crucial role in jerk cuisine's historical development, the festival carries a genuine sense of place that distinguishes it from jerk festivals held elsewhere on the island or internationally.

For visitors specifically interested in jerk cooking's actual origins rather than its more commercialised modern versions, Portland's festival offers the most historically grounded place in Jamaica to experience it — a direct link to the Maroon communities whose ingenuity created one of the Caribbean's most globally recognised culinary traditions.
