Nadi's major cultural festival since 1960, featuring food stalls, parades and the crowning of Miss Bula.
Running since 1960, the Bula Festival is Nadi's answer to Suva's Hibiscus Festival — a week-long celebration held each August on Fiji's western side, built around the word bula itself, Fijian for both 'welcome' and 'hello'. True to that spirit, the festival is designed to be genuinely welcoming to visitors, actively encouraging tourists to join in the festivities rather than simply observe from the sidelines.
The festival features colourful parades with elaborately decorated floats, traditional dance performances, live music and, at its centre, food stalls serving local delicacies from across the region. Like its Suva counterpart, the festival culminates in a beauty pageant, crowning Miss Bula as its central figure, alongside a host of community and cultural activities throughout the week.
Given Nadi's role as Fiji's main international gateway, the Bula Festival often serves as many visitors' very first taste of Fijian culture, and its emphasis on hospitality and open participation has made it a genuinely accessible entry point for anyone keen to experience island life beyond the resort.
