Held each October at Parque Vila Germânica in Blumenau, southern Brazil, Oktoberfest Blumenau has run since 1984 and grown into the second-largest Oktoberfest celebration anywhere in the world after Munich itself, and the largest German festival found anywhere in the Americas. The event was created in direct response to a devastating flood of the Itajaí-Açu River that year, conceived specifically to help rebuild the local economy and lift the morale of a city whose German roots run genuinely deep.

Blumenau was founded in 1850 by German pharmacist Hermann Blumenau and a group of fellow immigrants, and today the surrounding Itajaí Valley remains home to hundreds of thousands of residents with German ancestry, giving the festival's Bavarian-style architecture and traditions a foundation that predates the event itself by more than a century. Across 18 to 19 days, over 700,000 visitors fill the festival grounds for German sausages, pretzels, eisbein and sauerkraut, paired with more than 120 varieties of beer, while nightly parades feature dancers in dirndls and lederhosen accompanied by traditional oompah bands.

Given Brazil officially declared Blumenau the country's national capital of beer in 2017, home to over 120 beer producers, Oktoberfest Blumenau offers a genuinely significant cultural crossroads — proof that German brewing and festival tradition, transplanted to southern Brazil generations ago, can grow into one of the largest celebrations of its kind anywhere on earth.
