Maracaibo's major patron saint festival, honouring the Virgin of Chiquinquirá with processions, gaita music and gastronomic fairs.
Each November, Maracaibo transforms for the Feria de la Chinita, a citywide celebration honouring the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, the city's patron saint, affectionately known as 'La Chinita'. The festival blends deep religious devotion with an equally vibrant cultural programme, running from dawn until well after sunset across the city.
Alongside the processions, concerts and fireworks that mark the religious core of the celebration, the Feria de la Chinita features a robust programme of gastronomic fairs, where local food vendors serve dishes reflecting Zulia state's distinct regional culinary heritage. Traditional gaita music, the genre most closely associated with the Maracaibo region, plays throughout the festival, giving the event a genuinely regional character distinct from celebrations held elsewhere in Venezuela.
Unlike the more secular, party-driven festivals of Caracas, the Feria de la Chinita offers a window into a different side of Venezuelan celebration — one where spirituality, regional pride and food come together as a single, unified expression of Zulia's identity.
