Kava ceremony is the first act of welcome in Fiji. No meeting, wedding or official visit begins without it. The host presents a tanoa bowl and guests clap once before drinking.
Fijian ceremonial drink — ground kava root mixed with water and strained. A mildly narcotic drink central to every Fijian ceremony, social gathering and welcome ritual.
Place kava powder in muslin. Submerge in cold water.
Squeeze and knead the muslin repeatedly for 10-15 minutes.
Strain into a tanoa wooden bowl.
Serve in bilo coconut shell cups.
Kava is drunk in one gulp — sipping is considered impolite.
