Cheese rolls are the definitive food of Otago and Southland in the South Island of New Zealand. They are sold at every RSA, school fair and sports club across the South Island and are taken with tremendous regional pride.
New Zealand's beloved South Island snack — white bread rolled around a filling of cheese and onion soup mix, buttered and grilled until golden. Deceptively simple and completely addictive.
Mix grated cheese with soured cream and onion soup mix.
Spread generously on each slice of bread.
Roll tightly and secure with a toothpick.
Butter the outside of each roll generously.
Place seam-side down on a baking tray.
Grill or bake at 200°C until golden all over, turning once.
The rolls must be tightly wrapped and the outside well buttered — this is what gives them their characteristic crispy, golden exterior.
