Created in 1940s Durban by Indian Muslim workers who couldn't eat in whites-only restaurants. Now beloved nationally.
Durban's iconic street food — a hollowed loaf of white bread filled with curry. Created by the Indian community of Durban, now eaten across South Africa.
Cook curry until rich and thick.
Cut the top off each bread loaf. Hollow out the inside.
Fill with hot curry. Replace the bread top.
Serve with the scooped bread alongside for dipping.
The bread absorbs the curry as you eat — the final pieces are the best.
