Piña Colada

Puerto Rico

Most widely credited to bartender Ramón 'Monchito' Marrero at the Caribe Hilton's Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in the mid-1950s, though rival Puerto Rican bartenders have long contested the claim. Declared Puerto Rico's official national drink in 1978.

Puerto Rico's national cocktail — white rum blended with double cream, coconut cream and fresh pineapple juice over crushed ice until thick and frosty. The name means 'strained pineapple' in Spanish.

Ingredients

60mlwhite rum
30mldouble cream
30mlcoconut cream
60mlfresh pineapple juice
handfulcrushed ice

Method

1

Add the rum, double cream, coconut cream and pineapple juice to a blender.

2

Add the crushed ice and blend until smooth, thick and frosty.

3

Pour into a chilled glass and serve immediately, garnished with a pineapple wedge if you like.

Chef's Tip

Don't skip the crushed ice in the blender — it's what gives a proper piña colada its thick, frozen texture rather than a thin, watery one.
