Smørrebrød

Denmark

Evolved from workers carrying bread and leftovers to work. It evolved into an elaborate lunch culture with its own rules and etiquette.

Danish open sandwiches — buttered rye bread topped with a precise arrangement of fish, meat, egg or vegetables. An art form as much as lunch.
