The Cubano developed among Cuban immigrant communities in Florida in the early 20th century and remains one of the most beloved and widely recognised Cuban dishes internationally.
Cuba's most famous sandwich — roast pork, ham and Swiss cheese layered with pickles and mustard between Cuban bread, pressed until crisp and golden. A genuine Cuban icon known worldwide.
Spread mustard generously over both cut sides of the bread.
Layer roast pork, ham, cheese and pickles between the bread halves.
Butter the outside of the sandwich on both sides.
Press in a hot sandwich press or heavy pan with a weight on top for 4-5 minutes, flipping once, until golden and the cheese is melted.
A genuinely hot press is essential — this is what gives the Cubano its signature crisp, flattened crust.
