Ranch dressing was created in the 1950s by Steve Henson, who made it on his ranch in Alaska and then at Hidden Valley Ranch in California. It became America's best-selling salad dressing.
Cool, creamy buttermilk dressing with garlic, chives and dill. America's favourite dip for wings, pizza and crudités.
Whisk the mayonnaise, sour cream and buttermilk together in a bowl until smooth.
Stir in the garlic, herbs, lemon juice, onion powder, salt and pepper.
Chill for at least 1 hour to let the flavours develop.
Thin with a splash more buttermilk for a dressing, or leave thick as a dip. Keeps for 5 days in the fridge.
Fresh herbs make all the difference. Dried herbs work in a pinch, but use about a third of the amount.
